The competition, officially supported by the Sony Ericsson UK B-Boy Championships World Series, was held at the Albany Theatre in Deptford, South London on Sunday 15th May 2011, and was entered by nine secondary school breakdance crews who had qualified at regional heats around the country earlier this year.

This year Breakin’ Hearts comprises an 8 student all female crew, aged from 13 to 17 years old.

Judges B-Boy Spin, B-Boy Just Do It and B-Boy Mid-Air watched as nine crews took part in the national quarter and semi-final battles with music by DJ Hooch, culminating in a final battle with Breakin’ Hearts and the N.V.L. crew. After declaring a tiebreaker, two dancers from each crew were nominated to battle it out for the trophy, and after performances from Kaira Manders and Izzie Emblem, the trophy was won by Breakin’ Hearts. B-Girl Kaira Manders won the Chief Rocker prize for her outstanding performance at the event.

As well as the Champions Trophy, Breakin’ Hearts also took home tickets to the B-Boy World Championships in October. They will also be taking part in the Regional Conflict held at the o2 Academy Islington on the 9th July, to dance alongside other national professionals.

Seri Hodges, Head of Dance at Highworth Grammar School, says: ”I’d like to thank our sponsors Wilkins Kennedy for their continued support and the organisers Artspool and Pro-Create for putting on a truly fantastic event.”

“We had an incredible day, meeting so many enthusiastic young people inspired by breakdancing, and we are really pleased to have won the National Championship title this year after coming runner-up last year. Our ten months of training with Ajay Jackson from Soul Mavericks Crew, who represented Great Britain in the World Finals last year, has been hard work but totally worth it!”

Mike Swan
from Wilkins Kennedy, says: “Wilkins Kennedy decided to sponsor the crew after watching their DVD over a year ago, and we have never looked back. The atmosphere at the event was absolutely electric and we are really proud of the Breakin’ Hearts crew and their much deserved award, they have really worked hard and their visible energy and enthusiasm is unbeatable.”
